Financepr.com's Edith Reads pins CryptoPunks' popularity to several factors. She affirms, " CryptoPunks remain special to the NFT space. The project derives value from being a pioneer in the field. Again, there's been a boom in NFTs. That coupled with the status that one draws from owning them (CryptoPunks) increases their demand."
CryptoPunks' dominance
Besides taking the lion's share of the traded volumes, CryptoPunks also led in the number of artworks in the top 10 list. It contributed six, whereas SuperRare and Bored Ape Yacht Club added one and three respectively.
That said, the SuperRare project had the priciest NFT on offer. Its All-Time High in the City (ATHC) artwork fetched 1630 ETH or $6.2 million in cash.
CryptoPunks' C#2681 came in second after selling for about 900 ETH ( approximately $3 million). And closing the top three best-sellers was Bored Ape 3562 NFT that went for 430 ETH or roughly $1.6 million.
BAYC and Cryptopunks shared the remaining slots. While BAYC added two collectibles to the group, Cryptopunks contributed five.
Mainstreaming NFTs?
NFTs are steadily going mainstream. Analysts estimate their market grew from $100m in 2020 to about $22 billion in 2021.
All indicators back that trend in 2022. Celebrities and corporate institutions have contributed to that growth. They're joining the NFT bandwagon pulling their fans along. For example, Business Mogul Kevin O'Leary has projected that NFTs will eclipse Bitcoin.
Sports and entertainment personalities have joined the fray too. LeBron James, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Shakira are pursuing NFTs. There are Visa, Nike, and Coca-Cola on the corporate front.
